Who she is...

Bernadette Nason

Bernadette Nason is an actress/writer/comedienne/storyteller, registered as a touring artist with the Texas Commission on the Arts.  She has been performing in central Texas since 1993 but she has been telling stories since she was old enough to speak. Nowadays her stories are more organized and easier to understand, but the excitement, enthusiasm and energy are just the same as they were then.

Bernadette became committed to producing high quality storytelling shows when she saw that many parents had stopped telling their children bedtime stories. She also noticed that watching television and playing video games were hindering the development of children's own storytelling skills. She believes we need to keep literature alive through the power of live storytelling, encouraging audiences to tell the stories they hear. Bernadette hails from England where she studied at Guildford Acting School. She uses her performance skills in all her work. Her English accent is regularly heard on NPR’s Sunday a.m. radio show "Sound Sight" and she is often seen on TV and in regional theatrical productions.

What people say...

"It would be hard to find another performer in the state of Texas who has more experience with performing solo before large groups of children. Bernadette is honest, sincere, talented, beautiful, and hard working. I can think of no better role model to place before young audiences."

-Judy Matetzschk, Director, Project InterAct, Zachary Scott Theatre

"Thank you so much for sharing your “Legends of Texas Wildflowers” with our fourth graders. I especially appreciated your elaboration on your acting career. Our students do not get nearly enough exposure to the creative arts. They rarely encounter any adults that have chosen the arts as a career path. Thanks again for the entertaining morning, and enlightening our students! PS: Notice how many remember you from last time you were here!!"

-Kelli Kirk, Fourth Grade Teacher, Windermere Elementary, Pflugerville

"If I look up the word “trooper” in the dictionary I’m bound to find a picture of you. I would like to thank you for returning to perform in the Children’s Chapter Entertainment Tent this year. I have enjoyed every performance as much as the kids and their parents. You have turned in wonderful performances in the face of adversity. You are a great storyteller and artist. Thanks again for a great performance."

-Jane Sheaffer, Children’s Entertainment Chair, Texas Book Festival

"Thank you so much for coming to our school and performing your Chinese folktales…my son was able to tell the stories from your presentation at the dinner table that night! His father was very impressed! He wrote a most impressive sentence about the thing he liked most about the stories! I put it in his scrapbook. Thanks again for sharing your expertise. We look forward to your “Rabbit Tales” on April 1."

-Sherry Kanak, Librarian, Barton Hills Elementary School

"In December, you visited out school. You did a wonderful job telling the stories to the children. They greatly enjoyed them. You are a very talented lady! You were also an inspiration to me. Many of the things you did to make the stories come alive, I could also do as I read to the children. They enjoyed the show so much they wanted to write you thank-you letters! We do hope that you can come back again sometime soon"

-Brande Natal, First Grade Teacher, Brown Primary, Smithville

"The whole school is still talking about your dramatic presentation of “Stories for a Dark and Stormy Night.” The performance was so exciting and inspirational to our students on a number of levels. I was able to sound out “Wait till Whalem Balem Comes” from a few of our newest drama critics – apparently that struck a chord with the younger set! I hope we are able to do a return engagement in the future – it was a pleasure to meet you."

-Patti Eichenberg, Media Specialist, St. Joseph’s Catholic School, Killeen

"You are a fascinating storyteller. The ability to capture and hold the attention of hundreds of 4-7 year-olds is a true gift. You were quite entertaining to the young at heart as well!"

-Shari Bang
